These are cheddar jalapeno soft pretzels, a step above your average ballpark variety and were even one-upping Auntie Annes because, when was the last time she added cheddar into the mix? Not any kind of pretzel Ive had before, thats for sure. And if that wasnt enough, Im going to tell you the absolute best thing to dip these pretzels in.
Soft pretzels and I go way back. I was probably the only kid in elementary school that opted for the jalapeo variety every time the opportunity presented itself. It didnt stop there; they were a weekly staple for me back in high school when all my friends and I would pile into my little Civic after school and drive to the mall once a week for window shopping. Im wise enough to admit now that I went more for the pretzels and less for quintessential teenage mall experience. They were my junk food of choice for dinner when I worked at local sporting events during the hot summer months. A soft pretzel was what my mom and I would split when that hankering for something salty came up when we shopped for back to school clothes.
Homemade pretzels first appeared on my blog eons ago, and Ive only made that recipe ever since. Theyre everything a good pretzel should be; golden and salty on the outside soft and chewy on the inside. And so easily customizable too. But over the years, I changed it up here and there. In went a handful of chopped jalapeos. Then came the ones on top. And finally, a handful of shredded cheddar was added on for some extra golden deliciousness.
Bloom the yeast for jalapeo soft pretzels:
Bake the pretzels until their golden on top, in the ballpark of 10-12 minutes. Once the pretzels are hot out of the oven, you can brush them with the remaining melted butter. You can see in the picture that I added cheddar cheese on to only half of the jalapeo soft pretzels. I still feel like I slightly prefer them without the cheese but hubby is convinced cheddar cheese pretzels are the way to go. And Ill let you decide how you like yours.

I like a little spice for my cheese, so I opted to add more jalapeo and a few extra seeds to kick up the spice. This cheese dip is mild if you choose to add less jalapeo. Feel free to add in more chili powder or seeds to increase flavor, but remember to start with less and add more as you go.
In a saucepan add butter and the minced jalapeo. Sauté the jalapeo for a couple of minutes to bring out the heat and flavor. You may add jalapeo seeds to add extra spice if desired. Sauté for 3-5 minutes and then set aside

Often in mall, you will often come across Auntie Anne's pretzel shops baking fresh soft pretzels with their signature pretzel dough. Today, I used my Salted Soft Pretzel Recipe to give you this mall-favorite snack. ot only a great on-the-go snack, I find these great for casual entertaining such as football game day, Friday movie night, or just family-munching time on the weekend. Honestly, I didn't even need a reason to enjoy few pretzels.
To make Pretzels Dough, I start with always-available-at-home pantry ingredients. All-purpose flour, milk, water, yeast, salt and butter. Butter makes dough buttery, milk keeps it soft. Pretzel dough only needs one round of dough-rise. After mixing above ingredients and 5 minutes of kneading, I let dough rise for 1-2 hours or until it is more than double in size.
Note:Hard pretzels are often dipped in caustic soda for that darker-brown colored pretzels. I, however, have always loved the authentic mall-style soft pretzels which are light golden brown in color. This can be easily achieved with Baking Soda. No need to hunt for caustic soda in grocery stores. Just use evergreen, always available at home, baking soda bath. It gives light golden brown color to pretzels and the same, addictive, pretzel aroma.
